Le 17 juin 1631 s’est éteint la princesse Mumtaz Mahal, épouse du célèbre Shah Jahan. Lorsqu'ils se rencontrent, à Agra la capitale de l'empire moghol, au nord de l'Inde, Khurram et Arjumand sont seulement âgés de 16 et 15 ans. Dès leur premier regard, le prince héritier et la jeune fille tombent amoureux. Ils se marieront quelques années plus tard, vers 1612, Arjumand devenant sa troisième femme. Celle-ci, d'une grande beauté, est surnommée "Mumtaz Mahal", la merveille du palais. Lorsqu'il devient grand moghol, Khurram prend le nom de Shah Jahan. De cette amour naîtra 14 enfants mais malheureuse c’est en donnant la vie à son dernier fils que Mumtaz disparue. Malheureux, Shah Jahan décide de faire construire un monument en l’honneur de son épouse favorite : le Taj Mahal.
